In the summer of 1946, Harris & Partington an old firm of Cabinet Makers and Undertakers were looking to take on an apprentice Cabinet Maker and applicants were told to turn up for interviews on Monday morning.
Having just turned 14, an enterprising George Pearce had heard about the vacancy and thought that if he turned up on Saturday morning prior to the Monday, the Manager might just think he had a bit of initiative!
His efforts were rewarded with a job and 6 years later, after serving his apprenticeship he spent 2 years in Germany with the Royal Engineers completing his national service in 1952.
He returned 2 years later in July 1954 and took up where he left off at the same firm and continued until 1959 at which point he borrowed £200 from his father and bought the business from the retiring owner, Harry Bancroft.
The Business continued to build strong relationships working for Local Breweries such as Daniel Thwaites & Matthew Brown (Lion) as well as many Domestic Clients.
The Company Registered for VAT when it was first introduced in April 1973 as a condition of joining the EEC which is now known as the EU.
In 1982 a larger premises with 2 Joinery Workshops was purchased on Weir Street, Blackburn at which point two of his Sons (both having served their time as Joiners) were made partners in the firm and the decision was made to change the trading name to George Pearce & Sons.
George Pearce eventually retired on his 75th Birthday in 2007 having worked 61 years and we celebrated 50 years of ownership by the Pearce family on the 31st October 2009.
